Welcome Back!

Summer is coming to a close, the back-to-school rush is on, and the Sunflower PTA executive board has been busy making plans for the upcoming school year.  We appreciate the time many of you spent completing our survey last spring and have used your responses to help guide our planning process.  You overwhelmingly told us that our top priority should be to supplement curriculum.  We spoke with students and staff who also offered their feedback.  Collectively, we have identified four key priorities for the 2011-2012 school year.  They are as follows:

  1. Supplement and enhance curriculum
  2. Promote cultural awareness, the arts and character development
  3. Foster and nurture a community atmosphere
  4. Encourage students, staff and families to adopt healthy habits

We are excited at the prospect of both bringing new programs to Sunflower and continuing many traditional favorites.  We are currently exploring proposals to offer:

  • After school, parent funded foreign language
  • Environmental awareness activities
  • Internet safety and anti-bullying resources
  • An inspiring readers program
  • Nutrition and fitness information and incentives
  • Family math and science nights

Please consider giving of your time and talents to help us make these opportunities a reality!  We will be available to answer questions and take note of volunteers at Back-to-School nights on August 16th and 17thfrom 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

A notable change this year is that our annual Lap-a-Thon will be the only fundraiser sponsored by PTA.  We understand how frustrating it is to be bombarded with requests to sell items to family and friends.  Our hope is that you will find this strategy both refreshing and convenient. We also hope that you will carefully consider joining PTA and making a tax-deductible donation to support our programs.  We must raise approximately $20,000 per year to maintain our current level of programming.  We are also interested in pursuing corporate sponsorships for our events and activities.  If your business or employer would like more information on opportunities to partner with our school or to take advantage of your employer’s matching funds benefits, please contact Amy Wilkinson at awilkinson@hntb.com or Elizabeth Jones at kahlenj@gmail.com.

Finally – we will be hosting three general membership meetings this year.  These meetings will be held on August 23rd, January 17th and April 17th and will provide important opportunities to give feedback, make suggestions and vote on issues affecting our school and organization.  All PTA members are also welcome and encouraged to attend executive board meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month. Please come share information and ask questions!

Watch your inbox for regular PTA updates throughout the year and check back often for all the latest information.
