From the Principal's Desk

Spring brings with it many different joys and challenges.  Spring brings baseball games . playing golf and wearing shorts.  It brings drives with the top down and spring breezes through open windows.  The challenges spring brings include mowing the lawn and working in the garden.

There are parts of my lawn that grow faster and fuller than others.   Parts of the lawn and garden need extra work in removing weeds and parts that need extra seed or plants to get going.  In the end with a little care and nurturing, everything comes together to be a beautiful, colorful mix of sizes, colors and shapes.  You see the fruits of your labors as they grow together into maturity.

Spring lawns and gardens are a lot like an elementary school. We are made of so many different parts.  Each part a unique shape and color.  Each part comes with its own distinct gift to share.  Like spring lawns and gardens, each part matures at different rates and at different times, and your labor and nurturing helps them grow to maturity.

As we end spring and move into summer vacation, let me take this time to thank all the different parts that make up the lawn and garden we know as Sunflower. Together we have grown into something beautiful and vibrant.  Something that makes it great to be a Cyclone.

From the PTA President

Wow! Can you believe that the end of the school year is almost here? The year went by fast.

There are a lot of activities still left in the school year so please keep an eye on the school calendar.

The Carnival was a big success. I want to thank Allene Eland for all the hard work she put into this event and also thank all the volunteers that helped pull the Carnival off. What a great group of people.

I want to thank this year's Outstanding PTA Board, you made my job very easy.  Thank you.

Congratulations to the 6th grade team, The Explosions, for coming in 3rd place at the 1stannual Brain Bowl. Great Job!

When we relocated here 14 years ago we visited several schools in the area. Sunflower had the right feel for us; we found out that we made the right choice. We have met so many great kids, families, administrators and teachers. I hope our paths will cross in the future. Have a safe summer.

2010-2011 PTA President Lowell Teague

Sunflower Elementary School is planning a Fee Payment Day for Monday, August 8th, from 10 AM to 6 PM. A credit card can be used at the school on Fee Payment Day ONLY.  There will notbe an additional charge. At this time, PTA will have a table with valuable information to enable you to join this great organization.  You will also be able to purchase school lunches. Please take advantage of this convenience.

There are only 19 days of school left in May.  To avoid charges carrying over to next school year, the cost of paid lunches is $40.85.  The cost for paid breakfast is $22.80.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.

This year all student balances remaining at year-end will be rolled forward to next school year.  This includes all 6th grade student balances.  Your 6thgraders balance will carry forward to Westridge Middle School.  Any negative balances will first be covered by any siblings' accounts.  If a negative balance still remains, then the negative balance will carry forward.

Shawnee Mission West will be offering summer Basketball Camps at Shawnee Mission West.  Fliers posted on the Virtual Community Bulletin Board at

As we reach the end of another year, we celebrate the time our 6th Graders have spent at Sunflower.  On Friday, May 20, 2011, at 8:30 AM, sixth grade students and guests will attend the 6thGrade Breakfast and Awards Ceremony.  This is an exciting time for our children!

Shawnee Mission's SMART (Science, Math, and Reading Time) Start program is now accepting applications for the 2011-12 school year.  Four-year-old students are selected for this pre-kindergarten program based on several at-risk factors including free or reduced lunch status, single-parent families, children of teenage parent(s) or parents who did not graduate from high school, children who are limited English proficient, and children of active military families.

An exemplary staff has developed a strong, developmentally-appropriate curriculum utilizing effective instructional strategies.  Students receiving this early intervention are immersed in enriching educational opportunities, resulting in significant student success.  Children who participate in the SMART Start program will enter kindergarten with a strong foundation of instructional and behavioral skills, providing them with the benefits of a solid, positive beginning to their educational experience.

For more information or to apply for the SMART Start program, please contact Joyce Ferris in the curriculum and instruction department at 993-8653.

The library "check-out season" is nearing an end.  Kindergarten's last check-out will be the week of May 2 - 6.  That same week students in grades 1 - 6 will only be able to check out twobooks.  MAY 19 - 13 will be the LAST WEEK for students in grades 1 - 6 to check out books.  They may only check out one book that week.   ALL library books are due the week of MAY 16 -20. Please help your child end the year with all his/her books turned in.
